What’s Happening in Kindergarten
Our first week back in class after break has been a busy one! We are hitting the ground running working on sight word recognition. Each morning and afternoon, we are practicing learning 40 Kindergarten Sight Words. I will be sending home materials that you can use to help your child master learning sight words.
In addition to memorizing sight words, we are also diving deep into CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) word practice. This includes reading CVC words, building them, blending them, and writing them. Our first week back we began practicing reading words with medial /a/ (short a sound).
On Wednesday this week, Fr. Bennett stopped by our room and gave our room a blessing and wrote the traditional Epiphany House Blessing on our door. We learned about the three gifts that were brought to baby Jesus on this day, and the meaning of the numbers and letters now written on our door in chalk.
To end the week, both Kindergarten classes completed a very cute snowman craft to decorate the bulletin board in the Kindergarten hallway for the month of January! Stop by the hallway to check out and find your child’s snowman! 🙂
Last but not least, on Monday we wrote about what we did over Christmas break and/or what we received for Christmas. It is amazing to see the growth in the students writing mid-way through the year! Here is an example:
It says (translated from Kindergarten writing): “I got the big Barbie house. I love my Barbie house!”
We are going to be starting Writer’s Workshop next week, where students will be making lists, writing, revising, peer editing, and publishing on the topic for that week. Next week we will be writing about animals!
