Sorting Magnetic Letters & Numbers Through Inquiry Learning

IMG_0133

During our first week of school, I presented them with a ‘mystery item’. I told my groups that they would need to try to sort this item and let them decide how to do it. They did a great job! Almost all groups started grouping by color, but I also saw grouping in many other ways! For example, some sorted one pile of numbers and one pile of letters. Another group sorted the same letters together, and others even started putting numbers and letters in order. It was a great way to introduce group work and to do it in a hands-on inquiry based lesson.
